Closebye is the New York–based quartet of Jonah Paul Smith, Margaux Bouchegnies, Julian Paint Smith, and Simon Clinton. The close-knit group occupies a darker space in pop, pairing ambitious pop songwriting with the detail-rich sensibilities of indie rock lifers, “held together by a consistently warm, melodic, and smooth touch” (KEXP). Their live show is equally striking and playful, with “sprightly hooks, rhythmic energy, and playfully snarky spirit” (Stereogum), while the band’s visual world and graphic identity draw from the shadowy atmosphere of Southern Gothic and the darker iconography of Western Americana.
Their sophomore album, Hammer of My Own, earned acclaim and support from Stereogum, KEXP, Spotify Editorial, Atwood Magazine, and more, with Pitchfork including it in its New Music Releases and Upcoming Albums in 2024. Lead single, “Pilates,” reached #1 on Spotify’s Fresh Finds Indie, while the album spent three weeks on the NACC Top 200, peaking at #53.
In June 2026, Closebye returned with the A/B single “No Troubles Left At All / Ann Arbor,” their first self-produced release and the beginning of a more self-directed chapter for the band. The release received support from Stereogum, KEXP, WDET, Atwood Magazine, Northern Transmissions, and more, with “No Troubles Left At All” featured as KUTX’s “Song of the Day”.
Closebye has shared stages with artists including Wallice, Radio Free Alice, and THUS LOVE. In 2026, the band completed its longest stretch of touring to date, including runs with Kevian Kraemer and Lunar Vacation and Levitation Festival in Austin, TX, where KUTX praised Closebye as “a deft coalescence of lush pop songwriting with college indie rock attitude” and “a delectable combination for Levitation”.
